For The Love of Food
Welcome to Friday’s For The Love of Food, Summer Tomato’s weekly link roundup.
This week one fish serving is linked to bigger brains, omega-6s aren’t so bad for you, and BPA linked to developing food allergies.
Want to see all my favorite links? (There’s lots more). Be sure to follow me on on Delicious. I also share links on Twitter @summertomato, Google+ and the Summer Tomato Facebook page. I’m very active on all these sites and would love to connect with you. (Yes, I took that picture of the pepper heart myself.)
Links of the week
- This Is Your Brain on Fish <<New research shows huge advantage in maintaining brain volume (a marker for dementia) with eating fish just once a week. Please note that you have to actually eat the fish, not just pop those omega-3s. (The Atlantic)
- Why the Omega-3/Omega-6 Ratio May Not Matter After All <<Speaking of omega-3s and real food, remember when I said not to worry so much about the science and just focus on what works? Here’s an example of science catching up to real life. (Mark’s Daily Apple)
- Bisphenol A and food intolerance, a link established for the first time <<Could the huge increase in the number of people with food intolerances be due to baby bottles? New research suggests it might. (INRA)
- The Restaurant Menu That Nudges People Toward Healthy Food <<One of my favorite scientists, Brian Wansink, is at it again with his awesome applications of psychology to health. (The Atlantic)
- The Body Mass Index (BMI) Says Nothing About Your Health <<Ever get the feeling that there’s more to you than your BMI? Here’s a great analysis of what it actually tells you, along with an even better (and just as easy) way to measure your health and body fat. (Obesity Panacea)
- Country-of-Origin-Labeling (COOL) for meat: Yes! <<Knowing where your food comes from isn’t always easy, but it just became a little more transparent thanks to the latest court decision. You finally get to know where your meat comes from! Whoop! Whoop! (Food Politics)
- Sushi Nail Art Goes Viral in Japan <<What’s not to love? Seriously though, click over and check out the pics. These are amazing. And I need them. (Wall Street Journal)
- We are what we eat, but that doesn’t mean we can’t change <<I like this idea about how culture shifts in “normal” eating habits can be made, and how it doesn’t involve “Do this because it’s good for you.” Feel free to ignore the overbearing pro-vegetarian stance, I did. (Grist)
- The Best Way to Organize Your Freezer <<Some handy tips, especially if you have a small freezer like I do. (The Kitchn)
- Recipe: Swiss Chard Taco Wraps with Cumin-Lime Sauce <<I don’t think I would go so far as to call these tacos, but they sure look and sound tasty. (The Kitchn)
What inspired you this week?
Great links, however I’m not really fond of the omega6/omega3 article as the author has missed a lot of information regarding the production of pro- and anti-inflammatory oxylipins.
Hi Darya
What multivitamin do you take? Any particular reason for taking it? Same question for fish oil and Vitamin D?
Thanks a bunch!
Yep, here’s the deets http://summertomato.com/about/faq/
Thanks a bunch Darya! I was listening to your earlier youtube videos and wondering what multi vitamins you were taking during your graduate student days? As a graduate student I am tight on budget and looking for alternative options to the one you are taking currently.
I think I took some from Trader Joe’s, but they weren’t food-based so I wouldn’t necessarily recommend them now.
