For The Love of Food
Welcome to Friday’s For The Love of Food, Summer Tomato’s weekly link roundup.
This week exercise is better than drugs, organic, full-fat milk attains nutritional superiority, and how dad’s diet affects baby’s health.
Want to see all my favorite links? (There’s lots more). Be sure to follow me on on Delicious. I also share links on Twitter @summertomato, Google+ and the Summer Tomato Facebook page. I’m very active on all these sites and would love to connect with you. (And yes, I took that pepper heart pic myself).
Links of the Week
- Fresh Research Finds Organic Milk Packs In Omega-3s <<The molecular composition of organic milk is superior to that of conventional (Why do they get to use this word again? Seems “industrial” would be more appropriate), especially the full fat (aka normal) kind. (NPR)
- Exercise as Potent Medicine <<New research shows that exercise is as effective as most drugs at saving the lives of those diagnosed with certain chronic diseases. Oh, it also helps prevent dementia. (NY Times; ScienceDaily)
- You Are What Your Father Eats: Father’s Diet Before Conception Plays Crucial Role in Offspring’s Health <<Fascinating new research on the role of a father’s diet before baby-makin’ and how it impacts the baby’s health. Seems drinking wine is helpful as well. (ScienceDaily; Wine Spectator)
- Is your child a fussy eater? Here’s what NOT to say <<I don’t think this is particularly scientific, but it’s interesting and likely worth a try if your kid’s eating habits aren’t ideal. (The Guardian)
- Eat More of These Four Things for a Stronger, Healthier Brain <<Good advice, though I find the constant salt-hating annoying. (Forbes)
- Chowing Down On Meat, Dairy Alters Gut Bacteria A Lot, And Quickly <<The title here is a bit misleading. It’s really the lack of vegetables that is causing the change in microbiome. (NPR)
- Good Body Image Goes Hand in Hand With Happier Relationship <<Dieters in particular seem to have poorer relationships with themselves and their partners. (Medline)
- Study Reveals Gene Expression Changes With Meditation <<The benefits of meditation are real. It seems to particularly mitigate the effects of stress and cortisol. Cool stuff. (ScienceDaily)
- Short Fasts for Weight Loss vs. Traditional Diets <<People ask me about intermittent fasting pretty often. I still don’t see the value if you can get healthy and lose weight without starving yourself several days per week, but it seems to work for some people. Long-term studies on humans are notably lacking. (WSJ)
- SMOKY BEETROOT HUMMUS <<I haven’t seen such an innovative and delicious looking take on hummus in a very long time. Love the dill pairing. (The Year In Food)
