    “Humans made the banana perfect”???

I think between 15k-17k steps are reasonable amount specially if you are not going to be active 7 days a week, so this can make up for days that you are not too active, i’m still trying to get my record up to 12k, just need a bit more motivation.

The 15k article and the one on how close should our gym be deeply resonated with me.
This year, when I moved, I looked for a flat very close to both a gym and a park/forest and I am so lucky to have: 1/ a gym 50 meters from my flat, and 2/ a forest 5 minutes walk away. And after 8 months living here, I am fitter than I have ever been!!
Convenience in fitness is key, as it is in food…. Thus think ahead and always be prepared 🙂

Unfortunately I couldn’t read the WSJ article about gyms because it was subscriber-only (at least now as I catch up – maybe it wasn’t originally?). But if the conclusion is that workout resolutions are more likely to be followed through on if the gym is closer, then ABSOLUTELY agree in my experience. It’s why I opted to buy a bike (even though I had a free campus gym membership at the time in grad school) and why my husband bought a rowing machine (his high-intensity all-body workout of choice), because being able do to things at home set us up for success more than having to go to the local gyms (at minimum a 5min drive). What we lack in diversity of options we make up in likelihood of follow-through! And like Natacha above, we’ve learned to look for walking-friendly neighborhoods to motivate an evening walk habit.

I read the study behind the article “Should 15,000 Steps a Day Be Our New Exercise Target?” and it is based on the data of only 111 people working in a post office. 🙁

Anyone with a little knowledge of statistics can tell that it is a small number of sample size for any such study where literally hundreds of criteria could change the outcome.

How about getting data from the fitness tracking companies on millions of users over a period of 1 year, 2 years and then analyzing their fitness progress vs number of steps taken?

I am pretty sure such kind of study would lead to better results (with higher confidence level) as compared to some random study done on 111 post office employees in Scotland.
