For the Love of Food

For The Love of Food
Welcome to Friday’s For The Love of Food, Summer Tomato’s weekly link roundup.
This week the senate calls BS on Dr. Oz (yay!), broccoli protects against pollution, and “natural” products are under fire (in the good way).
Want to see all my favorite links? (There’s lots more). Be sure to follow me on on Delicious. I also share links on Twitter @summertomato, Google+ and the Summer Tomato Facebook page. I’m very active on all these sites and would love to connect with you. (And yes, I took that pepper heart pic myself).
Links of the week
- Senators to Dr. Oz: Stop Promising Weight-Loss Miracles <<I love this. Senate committee calls BS of the week on Dr. Oz for lying about, well, everything. If you are ever tempted to take weight loss supplements, please read this article. (The Atlantic)
- Say no to ‘natural’ on food labels <<Did you know that the word “natural” on a food label basically means jack? Consumer Reports has launched a campaign to ban the misleading term. I’m delighted. (Consumer Reports)
- Fish politics: The FDA’s updated policy on eating fish while pregnant <<Very interesting perspective on the new fish and pregnancy recommendations. Worth a read, especially if you’re considering creating a tiny human. (Food Politics)
- Broccoli Loves Us <<Scientists recently discovered that broccoli sprouts help purge the body of environmental toxins. I’m sharing this not because I want you to drink broccoli smoothies, but because I want you to remember that vegetables are really darn good for you and protect you from a lot of the other bad stuff we do to our bodies. Eat them. All of them. And don’t stop. (The Atlantic)
- Want to know what the future tastes like? Eat some bugs <<Oh yay! I’m not the only one who thinks eating bugs is a good idea. (Grist)
- Exercising To Lose Weight Might Lead You to Gain Instead <<I like this study because it isn’t the exercise itself that is the issue, it’s the sign on the treadmill that tells you what you’re burning, and how you eat in response. Fascinating psychology. (Weighty Matters)
- Single-tasking Is the New Multitasking <<This is funny (though beware of autoplaying video––I’m sad The Atlantic doesn’t consider themselves better than that).
- Do You Really Believe You Can Change? <<This isn’t the most beautifully written piece on self-efficacy I’ve ever read, but I do think the message is very important. (Mark’s Daily Apple)
- roasted green beans with vinegary dill sauce <<Why have I never roasted green beans? This travesty shall soon come to an end. (our four forks)
- Recipe: Green Goddess Quinoa Salad Bowl <<I’m in a recipe kinda mood today, so you get a second one. Because who doesn’t want to eat this green goddess quinoa bowl? Not me, I’d eat that like crazy. (The Kitchn)
What inspired you this week?
Not only is “natural” not regulated on food labels, it’s not regulated on ANYTHING. Livestock and pet foods have the strictest definition, and even though I’m an animal lover, I find that very sad.
My partner often has a pretty harsh comment when it comes to claims such as ‘organic’; ‘biologic’ or ‘natural’, especially when it is meant to evoke thoughts on health. He says it to spark critical thinking. “Ebola, also very natural and organic…”
(Yes I am aware there is an outbreak as we speak and lives are being lost.)
Hi Ciska,
Here’s some articles that might help: http://summertomato.com/sell-your-family-on-healthy-eating-using-descriptive-copy/

Hi Darya,
It’s not that he does not understand the need for good, whole food. He just wants people to stop assuming ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ equals ‘good’. And as a matter of fact, he studies at a university where this is daily food for thought: http://www.wageningenur.nl/en/Expertise-Services/Chair-groups/Plant-Sciences/Laboratory-of-Entomology/Edible-insects.htm
You are definitively not the only one who thinks it’s a good idea.
Ok, got it. I agree with him.
Where can I find more of your “for the love of food”, I used to keep the email I received to read it later but I erase the last two of them and I want to read it
You can find them all in the Health tab at the top
