For The Love of Food
Welcome to Friday’s For The Love of Food, Summer Tomato’s weekly link roundup.
This week read about the many environmental factors in obesity, the miserable lives of supermodels, and why posting food pics on Facebook doesn’t make you an ass.
Want to see all my favorite links? (There’s lots more). Be sure to follow me on on Delicious. I also share links on Twitter @summertomato, Google+ and the Summer Tomato Facebook page. I’m very active on all these sites and would love to connect with you. (And yes, I took that pepper heart pic myself).
Links of the week
- The Obesity Era <<Fascinating exploration on some of the non-willpower related reasons we (and other species) have gotten fatter this century. (Aeon)
- The truth about modeling: What I wish I’d said to my fans <<Ever wondered how miserable it is to be a supermodel? If not, you should probably read this. (Herald Sun)

- For nearly 1 in 5 Americans, BMI may tell the wrong story <<While it drives me nuts when people equate metabolic health with overall health (ever heard of cancer? or depression? or arthritis?), I do agree that BMI isn’t particularly interesting for us as individuals. (LA Times)
- In defense of sharing photos of your food on social media <<Fabulous explanation of why food needn’t be belittled in social media. (SF Gate)
- Proponents of food biotechnology are still talking about Golden Rice? Sigh. <<Marion Nestle explains why golden rice isn’t the panacea supporters pretend it is. (Food Politics)
- Octopus Salad (Ensalada de Pulpo) <<Why I haven’t tried to make this, one of my favorite all-time dishes, at home is a mystery. I imagine it will be remedied soon. (Simply Recipes)
What inspired you this week?
I don’t have children, but I thought the article “Don’t Blame Your Children for Their Weight” had good take-away advice for anyone, especially spouses/partners. I liked the author’s advice to live by example and start changing habits slowly. Shaming definitely does not work, and if anything, it might make things worse. If you are just as invested in your own healthy habits, chances are they’ll rub off on your family. I seem to recall a study done in recent years where the health habits (good and bad) of a person’s closest circle of friends were almost exactly replicated by each friend in the social circle. Darya, maybe you could expound on this in another blog post sometime?
Although I enjoy every post of your inspiring blog, I always look forward to your links of the week. I usually don’t have time to read all the articles in one sitting, but use Pocket to save them for later (and actually do read them throughout the weekend). I also find new great websites through this. Thank you, Darya, for taking the time and providing this great service.

Thanks for the appreciation, it’s a lot of work!
Thanks for the article on the obesity era – very interesting read.. They say my country Trinidad and Tobago is #6 in obesity…. But I don’t see it
Cooking that octopus seems like a challenge to me….
The life of that model… Is her story…. I don’t believe it’s the norm…or I could be wrong
