Great Thinkers – The Benefits of Good Health

by Cathryn Johnson

Many of us, when we think of weight loss, exercise and living a healthy lifestyle, we think like Mark Twain:

The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like, and do what you’d rather not.

We focus on the negatives. We think about how hard it will be and all that we will be missing. But the real joy and benefit of good health comes from focusing on the positives of health, what we gain through living well.

Here are ten quotes from great thinkers to challenge, motivate and inspire us to exercise, eat right and live healthier lives:

10 Inspiring Quotes For Healthy Living

1. Buddha (c. 563 BC to 483 BC) – a spiritual teacher from ancient India who founded Buddhism

To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.

2. Marcus Valerius Martialis (known in English as Martial) (circa 40 AD – 103 AD) – a Latin poet from Hispania (the Iberian Peninsula) best known for his twelve books of Epigrams

Life is not merely being alive, but being well.

3. Edward Smith-Stanley (1752-1834) – English statesman, three times Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Those who do not find time for exercise will have to find time for illness.

4. Paul Dudley White (1886 – 1973) – an American physician and cardiologist

A vigorous five-mile walk will do more good for an unhappy but otherwise healthy adult than all the medicine and psychology in the world.

5. Henry Ward Beecher (1813 – 1887) – a prominent, Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, abolitionist, and speaker

The body is like a piano, and happiness is like music. It is needful to have the instrument in good order.

6. James Leigh Hunt (1784 – 1859) – an English critic, essayist, poet and writer

The groundwork of all happiness is health.

7. Francois Rabelais (c. 1494 – 1553) – a major French Renaissance writer, doctor and Renaissance humanist

Without health, life is not life; it is only a state of languor and suffering.

8. Francis Bacon (1561 – 1626) – an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, lawyer, jurist and author

A healthy body is a guest-chamber for the soul; a sick body is a prison.

9. Persius (34 AD -62 AD) a Roman poet and satirist of Etruscan origin

You pray for good health and a body that will be strong in old age. Good — but your rich foods block the gods’ answer and tie Jupiter’s hands.

10. Menander (ca. 342–291 BC) – Greek dramatist, the best-known representative of Athenian New Comedy

Health and intellect are the two blessings of life.

  1. I agree with all of them, but especially the thing about a walk improving mood.

In my case, it’s definitely true that some brisk exercise can improve my mood better than any other thing.

    Nice list!

  2. I really like the one that says ‘The groundwork of all happiness is health.’ I was sick for a short time and realized that without your health, you have nothing. These are some thought-provoking quotes.

  3. I like the one that reminds us time for exercise or time to be sick.

  4. Beautiful quotes. I love this one the most, “To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”

So true. Our body functions as well as what we give it. That’s why I love REAL food.

  5. Thanks for the quotes! These were perfect for our Daily Healthy Dose postings on our blog.

    Blessings,
    Ron

  6. Thanks for posting these quotes I will put some of these up on my Kay’s Naturals web page. Attitude is everything, and if we think of taking care of our body as a privileged, and a gift to preserve, exercise and eating well become a joy!

  7. Life and health is in our hands! Beautifull quotes! Living well means more than enjoying good health

  8. These quotes are right on target. They remind us that to live a healthy lifestyle is a duty and a serious decision that we have to make. Health does not happen to us while we abuse ourselves in every manner. It comes from living healthy. Thank you. I have used most of them on my facebook page [link removed]

  10. Grace says:

i agree with all of them, being healthy is a success but also a commitment, and acheivment.

  11. peter says:

“Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. When one is free from physical disabilities and mental distractions, the gates of the soul open.”

  12. Buddha was born in Nepal. Not in india..................... says:

Buddha was born in Nepal not India…

  13. Staci says:

“The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like, and do what you’d rather not.”

This quote inspires me the most even though it probably wasnt on the list. I’ve been smoking for 5 years now, i eat fast food about 4-5 times a week (I have a very high metabolism but it won’t be that way forever lol), i also love my root beer.. lol although I try to eat as many fruit ans drink as much water as possible, I’m sick of feeling like crap every day! I want to keep smoking, and I want to enjoy my fast food, I also just want to sit on the couch all day and relax meanwhile I planned on a bike ride. But I’m sick of letting myself do what i want. It’s time to take control and say no to the things I want! My goal is to save up all the money I’ve lost killing myself and put that towards a gym membership and make my way towards success! I’ve never been so motivated before reading this quote on this article. Thank-you.

Really inspiring quotes. Reading all these quotes makes you realize how important it is to stay healthy. Thanks for sharing.

  15. Greg Kasarik says:

Numbers 1, 3, 9 and 10 remind us that maintaining healthy behaviours and habits will lead to a better existence and is something that we should all aim for.

But many of these quotes aren’t inspiring at all. They are rank scaremongering and untrue to boot.

For example, imagine that you have been in a car accident and are looking for ways to get yourself happy and healthy, but know that you’ll be spending the rest of your life as a cripple and in chronic pain. Then read the following numbers 6, 7 and 8.

Number 4 is just patronising, especially to the many unhappy people, who have adequate reason for being so.

These quotes are basically saying that you may as well give up then and there, because without a healthy body, you’ll never be happy again. You are doomed to spend the rest of your life in “prison”.

Thankfully, the reality is different and most people tend to have a “happiness threshold” that they’ll return to after about twelve months, or so, irrespective of whether they have won the lottery, or hit by a truck.

I love the idea of inspiring quotes to encourage healthy behaviour, but they need to be aimed at motivating people and providing hope, even for those whose health is poor and who are trying to make the most of a bad situation.

Not everyone is going to get better.

The good news is that people can choose to be happy and choose to engage in behaviours that increase their happiness threshold, so that eventually when they do get sick (which happens to us all in old age), they can maintain good humour even if they can’t remember which jar they happened to have placed their bowels.

  16. HL Critic says:

SO not inspirational. Rather, it made me want to give up!

  17. Thank you so much for great inspiring quotes,

“I don’t know how people can fake whole relationships… I can’t even fake a hello to somebody I don’t like”

    Thank you

  18. Kalyan says:

Buddha was born in nepal not in india

  19. Lam Xung says:

“I always take Scotch whiskey at night as a preventive of toothache. I have never had the toothache; and what is more, I never intend to have it.”
    ― Mark Twain

  20. navaraj dhungel says:

budha was born in NEPAL NOT IN INDIA

  21. Tom says:

One should cherish the pursuit of good health, whether that be doing what they believe will get them to old age in good health, or just working on improving their current lot in life.

  22. Pat says:

“Everything in excess is opposed to nature.” – Hippocrates

  23. Jinjee says:

    Fresh is best!

  24. laura says:

    Indeed motivational.

    Thanks!

We all got problems but dwell on whats good. Worrying is wasted energy. Search for what makes you happy. Let life happen. Read the news but dont let it affect you. Smiles are infectious and great to receive

  26. Timo says:

We don’t realize how our health is our wealth until it’s gone unfortunately. Great read!
