The moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally come. The first strawberries of the season have arrived! And what a day for them to appear.

Today is easily the most beautiful we’ve had so far this year in SF. Of course this means my pictures didn’t turn out as well, since there was too much light. But it also meant I made my first salad of 2010!

Warm sunshine always inspires me to make salad, but the appearance of cucumbers, sugar snap peas and these adorable bolero carrots helped too.

Beyond these new additions, the selection this week at the farmers market wasn’t too different from last week. I’m going take this opportunity to cut this post a bit short and go enjoy the beautiful day. I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

  1. Oh, what I wouldn’t give for a farmer’s market and fresh anything!! Still freezing in New England – strawberry season is late June. Lucky you! Enjoy!

    STRAWBERRIES!!! Yes! We’ve been having our fresh strawberries here at the house. I was so excited to see them at the market! Their fragrance is just… irreplaceable! And hooray for your first salad of 2010! Are those eggs I see? Farm-fresh eggs, of course 😉

    HI Darya,

    Great post! i was wondering what – in place of salads – you have been having for lunch until now? I know you did a post on roasted root veg a while ago – has that been your staple winter lunch? do you have any suggestions for seasonal healthy lunches for a non-root veg eater? i do quite like roasted veg but they do make my stomach a little ‘loud’ and it can be quite embarassing in after lunch meetings! any suggestions gratefully received!

      Great question Emmy! My lunches have been pretty irregular this year since I haven’t been at lab much (been homing writing), so I’ve had the luxury of cooking real meals. Usually I have a big pile of kale or other greens with nuts and sometimes lentils or quinoa.

      However, one of my favorite discoveries this year has been the bean salad/stirfry. I don’t really recommend canned beans, since they don’t taste nearly as good as dried. Also, I experience zero digestive issues with beans I cook myself, which I cannot say about canned beans 😉

      Basically I get about 1/2-1 cup of beans and add herbs (cilantro, parsley, etc) and various cooked veggies – carrots, spinach, chard, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, beets, etc. and a little oil and red wine vinegar (salt + pepper). It is super filling, delicious and provides great fuel for my afternoon workout. All this and I keep losing weight! I’ll usually have a piece of fruit (orange or grapefruit) as well. You can make a similar dish with lentils.

    Hi! thanks so much for the speedy response – and thats a great idea! i know what u mean about it being easier to prepare healthy meals at home. my issues is I hate carrying tupperware because i walk in and it really effects my back. this meant i always took sandwiches but recently ive realised you can chop cooked veggies put them in a (re-usable!) ziplock bag and its no heavier… or i can store them in the fridge at work and chop them there. its really getting the grain/ starch in thats the problem (unless its bread!). however im going to utlilise your idea. I will actually need to use tinned beans since i cant cook at work and dont really want to carry them in – BUT i dont really mind the taste and digestively they seem to be fine with me. (i actually have baked beans quite a lot in the winter.. but im a bit wary about the sweet tomato sauce and i know they arent ideal!). anyhow – theres a whole foods really near my work – so i can get lots of different varieties of beans cheaply and i imagine mixing up the flavours/types of bean could actually be pretty interesting. in fact – im going to go in search of recipes now – how exciting! great frugal suggestion -ill let you know how it turns out! thanks again 🙂

    those are some seriously tasty looking poached eggs. What’s your secret? white wine vinegar? cracking eggs into a bowl before dumping them into water? creating a whirlpool?
