Foodist Approved: Huck’s Healthy Homemade Dog Treats

Huck and homemade dog treats

Huck’s homemade dog treats

Our dog Huck turned the big one-year-old today. Seems like just yesterday that we brought him home. Remember meeting nine-week-old Huckaboo? Well, we can definitely no longer hold him in one hand!

Huck’s been an extra patient pup now that he has a baby sister, so he deserved to be spoiled on his birthday. After a romp in the dog park, I set out to make homemade dog treats. I decided to combine two of Huck’s favorites—peanut butter and pumpkin.

The cookies actually turned out tasty (yes I tried one!) and are much healthier (and way less expensive) than store-bought treats.

Pumpkin and oats are great for doggie digestion and peanut butter and coconut oil will help your pooch maintain his good looks. Let me know if your furry friend likes these cookies as much as Huck did.

Foodist Approved: Huck’s Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree (canned 100% pumpkin)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup natural peanut butter (no salt added)
  • 2 Tablespoons coconut oil
  • Flour for rolling
  • Rolling pin
  • Food processor
Preparation

Pre-heat the oven to 350 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a reusable non-stick mat.

Pulse one cup of the oats in the food processor to turn into oat flour.

In a large bowl mix together the oat flour, rolled oats, pumpkin and egg.

Melt the peanut butter and coconut oil together over low heat, pour over the oat dough and stir to combine. Allow batter to cool completely.

Generously sprinkle flour on a cutting board and roll out the dough until it’s a quarter inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut into fun shapes or design your own.

Bake in the center of the oven for 15 minutes. Remove cookies from tray to cool. Make Fido sit then serve (candle optional).

Those look wonderful… I’ll give them a try and see if my two furbabies (Patches & Duke) like them.

    Your Huckaboo is adorable!

Is Huck a German Short-haired Pointer? We had one growing up. They are amazing dogs. My gutsy Labrador will love these bikkies

I wonder if cats can eat peanut butter. Nice job Elyse with the recipe. I would want to eat it. Fun post. I need to check more of your recipes.

What can I use instead of the pumpkin puree?
Pumpkin is currently out of season and there is no such thing as canned pumpkin where I live (outside the US).
Would cooked rice do? something else?

My dog loved these! They are cheaper than store bought treats and I feel better about giving them to my dog. Instead of using a cookie cutter, I used a pastry scraper before baking to partially cut the dough into 1/2 inch squares. Then after baking they broke apart quite easily. I froze half of them and one batch lasted me two months. Time to make another batch!

I absolutely love that first photo! Your dog is adorable. I made these and mine loved them. They do look tasty to me too! I’ll be making these again soon.
