For The Love Of Food

For The Love of Food
Welcome to Friday’s For The Love of Food, Summer Tomato’s weekly link roundup.
A lot of examples of healthstyle in action this week around the web. Some of my favorites revisit the principle of mindful eating, and why it is so important. In grosser news, what sort of sicko serves whale meat as sushi? “Would you like some baby snow owl with your endangered whale?” Jeez.
I read many more wonderful articles than I post here each week. If you’d like to see more or just don’t want to wait until Friday, be sure to follow me on Twitter (@summertomato) or the Summer Tomato Facebook fan page. For complete reading lists join me on the social bookmarking sites StumbleUpon and Delicious. I’m very active on all these sites and would love to connect with you there. (Note: If you want a follow back on Twitter introduce yourself with an @ message).
Links of the week
- What Really Makes You Fat <<I love this short post by Dr. Weil about the importance of mindset and attitude in health and weight loss. A great illustration of healthstyle in action. (Dr. Weil’s Daily Blog)
- Don’t eat on a full brain <<Another illustration of the importance of mindful eating. Focus on your food, it tastes good. (Weighty Matters)
- Sushi Spot Is Charged With Serving Whale Meat <<This is just wrong. It’s a place in L.A. (New York Times)
- Making Friends With Cucumbers <<I love stories about people learning to love foods they don’t like. I had a cucumber epiphany myself a couple years ago. (Ready Made)
- In studies of human populations, don’t believe everything you read <<LA Times health blog Booster Shots has been getting their panties in a bunch about overstated scientific conclusions lately. Although their points are very very basic, I applaud their efforts in educating the public about how little we actually know about the dynamics of food and health.
- Guinness — maybe not good for you, but not a bad choice either <<How many Guinnesses did you drink on Wednesday? Yeah, I don’t know either. But I’m not so worried about it. Drink a different beer? Find out its Calorie Counts on this website. (Los Angeles Times)
- Master the Mind and the Body Will Follow <<I loved this (guest) post over at MizFit Online by Ryan Sullivan from No More Bacon. He is a living example of how giving up diets and finding your healthstyle can help you achieve your health goals.
- The fate of vitamins in vegetables, stored and cooked <<Great analysis by Marion Nestle about why you shouldn’t get hung up about how/why/if you should cook your food. Just be normal and eat natural foods that taste good, however they are prepared, the rest will take care of itself. (Food Politics)
- Juice and diabetes risk <<Juice isn’t health food. Sorry, it’s not. (Nutrition Data)
- Roast Chicken with Caramelized Shallots <<For some reason I’ve been really into chicken lately. Weird, I know. But if you’ve tried the amazing chicken we get here in SF–totally different from anything you can find at a grocery store–you’d understand (I think). Anyway, this looks easy and tasty. Plus, I want to eat everything @davidlebovitz makes. (David Lebovitz)
I hope I’ve inspired you today 🙂 Did I miss anything?
Another great post. Thanks.
BTW, a great visual that might help people from drinking their calories: http://bit.ly/awEpYV – I know that when I saw this for the first time, I could not believe it.

Wow, just went to David L’s site, Great food! Definitely making the chicken, and the banana ice cream and the…
My favorite was pointing me to that chicken with shallots.
If you make it will you let me know how it turns out? I rarely cook meat, but that one looks easy enough and sounds awesome!
