How to get healthy without dieting | Darya Rose | TEDxSalem

by | Mar 21, 2019

My TEDxSalem talk is live! In it I describe what I believe are the three most essential psychological strategies you need to build better habits and stop dieting for good.

And since I know you’re curious, I was 8 months pregnant and this was shot just days before the eternal misery of the third trimester really set in.

Nova Joy Rose was born February 19, and we’re both doing great.

Congratulations on the birth of Nova Joy! So happy for you and your family.

As always, hearing you speak and reviewing your philosophy around food is so supportive. Learning to be mindful with my busy monkey mind has been a constant struggle. It has been worthwhile but also difficult. Your spoken reinforcement helps me stay the course and embrace the feel-good days of my life. You don’t seem to slip off the rails like I sometimes do, but your teaching helps me move on with the confidence I need to stay healthy and enjoy the opportunities life places on my path.

  3. JillH says:

Wow! I have always enjoyed your info links.

I have struggled to develop a philosophy that perfectly resonates with my thoughts towards health and fitness. You nailed it on the head. Thank you for all that you do. Continue to communicate your message. It’s vitally important.

Much happiness to your growing family!

  4. Beth says:

Congratulations on several counts Darya -personal and professional. Firstly, your presentation style was excellent. I know that it’s not easy to get everything you want to say neatly encapsulated into a 15 minute presentation. A great summation of your learnings from personal experience and peer-reviewed research. You are a breath of fresh air in a space filled with self-anointed nutritional gurus.

    You are my hero.

Best wishes to you three as you embrace this new season of life.

  9. Melissa says:

I really enjoyed your Ted talk. Having been trying to lose weight for a while now, and through trial and error finding what works best for me, this has pushed me steps ahead! I needed to hear that the habits we adopt need to feel good for them to stick. It’s so simple but not something we are ever conditioned to believe about losing weight. Thanks for your wisdom and congratulations on the birth of baby Nova.

  10. Amy P says:

Darya, if I could send you some sleep right now, I would. Congrats on being a parent of two people! The attitude you use to stay healthy really works great for parenting too! Your daughters are going to be so ahead of the game.

I really liked your talk; and for me, the best part is that your advice is just great for life in general. I have always been a small-steps person, so focusing on one thing that isn’t working at a time really works for me. I lost 40+ lbs. years ago. I lost that 40+ lbs 3 times before I just couldn’t ride the rollercoaster of weight and emotion anymore. When I decided for maybe vanity reasons that I was going to stay thin because I was allowed to, I did. That’s how I learned to confront all of my struggles with just the attitude that if I could do a little better at anything, life’s load was exponentially lighter. There is no reason to feel bad about ourselves for thing that are already done, or for things we *might* do wrong in the future.

I decided a long time ago that everyone is (excuse me) a fuck-up, but that’s not all we are. We make the decisions we can, when we realize that we can make better decisions, and that we have permission to work to have the life that will make us happy and balanced, it’s not so hard. Hard things happen, that is why I now work hard to be more ready to deal with them.

My Mom has dementia, she is not ‘mum’ anymore. My sisters have terrible problems with her: fighting, anger, hurt. Mom, to me now, is a mirror – her tone, her energy, her mood mirrors mine when I am with her. We do not relate with anger and hurt. She can’t answer for stuff from the past, and I know that if she knew that she could have done better, she would have, and she DID do so much right. I am so fortunate to be able to bring her comfort and peace and fun. Sure, being always alert is exhausting (kind of like a toddler that can really hurt you, without the fun of watching them ‘get it’) and sometimes heartbreaking, and there is definitely no beauty in this disease; but she does so much better when she is just loved and accepted unconditionally… it’s also imperative to do that for ourselves.

There is beauty and joy in every day, even the worst days; our job is to find it and share it with each other. Thank you for doing that! Your contribution here helps me, for sure. Your work is valuable; I am so grateful for all that you share.

  11. Amy says:

Sorry for the double post, somehow must have hit reply in the middle of writing? If I knew how to remove the first one I would, guess I just proved that I’m not perfect again 🤷🏻‍♀️

  12. Thank you Darya — well done! I appreciate your actionable and inclusive suggestions, encouraging people at all fitness levels to discover what motivates them, maintain a growth mindset and practice mindfulness to not only achieve fitness goals but to be happy.

Thank you for allowing your vulnerability and learnings about your own personal experience to inspire and motivate others.
