Is It Possible Your Healthstyle is Working Too Well?

Amy has been working on her healthstyle for over a year. Slowly she has changed her eating, exercise, sleep and mindfulness habits, and she finally feels like she’s in control of her health.

Now she’s waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Amy is a natural worrier, always ready for something to come along that negates all the hard work she’s done. She knows this is a tendency of hers, yet it’s hard not to feel like there’s some truth behind her fears since even successful diets have always left her in a worse place.

Her question for me today is what: does success look like from here now that everything is great?

This is an educational episode whether you’re a seasoned foodist or a newbie finding your path, since it will give you an idea of what the endgame looks like. Your brain judges success by what it expects it to look like. One great way to know this is by listening to someone who is already there.

    This was so enlightening and such a pleasure to listen to!

    I made a lot of connections to my own habits while listening to this. For example, when Amy described how she wanted to eat something sweet when her husband was deployed, it made me realize that a recent change in my work schedule prevented my husband and I from having dinner together one day a week (I work late evenings, so usually we only have one day to have dinner together.) Consequently neither of us cooked on that day and it kind of cascaded into a trend of eating junk food throughout the week. We both have enough time to cook, but I guess one of our major motivations for cooking is being able to enjoy a meal with each other. Now that I’m aware of it I can find a solution.

    The more I read your posts and listen to your podcasts the more I realize how applicable the ideas you explore are to other parts of your life. The part about being deliberate in your choices when you become aware that you’re falling into old habits really resonated with me- not with food choices specifically, but with overreacting emotionally in stressful situations, which is something I’ve struggled with. Over time I’ve come to realize there’s a moment where I can chose how to process my emotions and that I don’t have to fall apart simply because it’s what I’ve always done. And this also connected to that Trusting Your Future Self article: the more I chose to react sensibly, the easier it becomes, because I’ve successfully done it before.

    I also loved the part where you described how straying from one habit isn’t doom because you have many habits that support your health.
