Bugra Loses 168 Lbs and Improves to a 4.0 GPA by Switching to Real Food

Bugra was a university student in Turkey weighing over 350 lbs when he decided he needed to make a change. He moved to America to begin a masters degree program and started to count calories and exercise to lose weight.

While he was able to lose some weight while dieting, he eventually realized the changes he’d made were not sustainable and that his poor nutrition was costing him energy and mental focus. His grades suffered and he gained much of the weight back before discovering Real Food.

There have been many bumps in the road for Bugra, but today he is down 168 lbs while eating more. He’s also getting a 4.0 in his Ph.D program while studying less than before. He focuses on the quality, not the quantity of the food he eats, and says his mental focus is so much better that he can learn more with less effort.

He even reads more and is slower to anger than he was in the past. To use Bugra’s words, “Everything changed.”

    I have to have a strategy for limiting the total calories I ingest daily, other than merely sticking to real food. I always ate real food, just too much of it. I never was one for eating food from a box, except for my nemesis, GrapeNuts, but homemade bread: yikes. I could happily subsist on it.

    But I will readily admit that I couldn’t be happy on my current restricted calories if I ate anything but real food. I find that avoiding grains is key; if I stay away from flour, pasta, and rice, keep dairy to a minimum, and treat fruit as dessert, I automatically do well with small quantities of meat and large quantities of vegetables. Luckily, I love vegetables of all kinds and cooked in all ways, or raw.

    Nevertheless, I weigh and measure my food to ensure that my volume of real food doesn’t creep back up beyond what I need. I’ve lost 65 lbs. in the last six months; this works for me.

    Although I normally work with elite athletes, I have had two athletes begin my program weighing in excess of 350 lbs. One of them (6’6″) dropped to 230 in six months and has kept it off for more than ten years! The other one dropped to about 180 and has kept it off for more than five years! Both of them became ‘addicted’ to exercise and enjoy the natural ‘highs’ from it and the numerous other positive benefits from being healthy!
