Ask Darya: What should my relationship with my bathroom scale look like?

Ask Darya Scale

Happy Friday friends,

Due to holiday chaos, For the Love of Food will be spotty (possibly non-existent) during the month of December. Don’t worry though, it’ll be back in January.

Today I want to try something a little different. You might know that there is a section on Summer Tomato called Ask Darya where people can publicly ask questions and I do my best to answer them.

Instead of writing out an answer, this week I decided to answer a question in video format so I could go into more detail and more people could benefit. It was fun for me to create, so I hope you like it.

In today’s video I answer a question from Anna about how to develop a healthy relationship with your bathroom scale when you’re working to build muscle and lose body fat. There is certainly some nuance here, especially if the scale is something you’ve had a troubled relationship with in the past (or present).

The article she is referring to in the question is The Worst Thing You Can Do if You’re Trying to Lose Weight.

If this is something you guys enjoy I promise to get a better camera for future videos 🙂

Cheers,

Darya

Love the videos! In fact, just yesterday I watched your Ant Rant and that video led me to your Big Omaha talk. Both were awesome! As for weighing yourself I weigh myself daily and use a spreadsheet to get a five day average (nerdy, I know) which I consider my “real” weight. I’ve been doing this since March and am amazed at the effect of stress and illness on my daily weight! In fact my weight will spike before I even feel sick. I think your advice to keep at it (weighing yourself daily) is excellent because it really does give you so much excellent data and over time (and with averaging) it becomes one data point and not the sum. I call the scale “my friend who always tells me the truth.” 🙂

    Hi!

Recently started green smoothies once a day, wondering what your opinions were on them? I have noticed my jeans fitting a bit better 🙂

I like the videos, especially if you keep them short like this one. Also I didn’t know about the Ask Darya section of your website, so that was a happy find!

Well that is a NYC living room for sure! A lovely one though.

I really like the video format!

  7. Great concept that weight is a data point. I find that many people (myself included) have a normal weight “range” up and down, so weighing myself everyday reinforces that i don’t have to stress, or even notice much, when i am in that range. For me the range is 1 to 4 pounds and there are several factors that affect it. Hydration, time of day, when my bigger meal of the day was the day before, certain foods that seem to cause more temporary inflammation, even sleep, etc) If I see that I start to maintain at the higher end for several days, then i might review my habits a little more closely (acknowledging less than stellar habits have been too frequent – haha). But not judging the numbers too harshly, and accepting the range of data keeps me smiling when i review, even if it is not on the low end that particular day.
It took a while to get to that mindset though; thanks Darya, for simplifying this concept for us.

    Love, love the video format!

  9. Great video Darya. Your right some things are just easier explained in person and this is a great format for that. I feel like your site just keeps getting better and better 🙂

  10. Miranda Weinstein says:

    I like the video format!

  11. I like your advice and I must add that I think people put too much emphasis on the scale. I always tell people to check as little as possible and just do the right things. If you are building muscle and losing fat there is always a chance that you won’t lose any weight. However, you will gain muscle, look better, and be healthier!

I loved the video and would welcome more!
