Farmers Market Update: Spring Showers
Sometimes I’m less excited to go to the farmers market in the rain, but after spending last week in Austin consuming nothing but meat and alcohol I was ecstatic to get back to the market today, even if it meant getting a little wet.
Luckily my efforts did not go unrewarded. To my astonishment I found stunningly beautiful, deep red heirloom tomatoes today. Tomatoes! I was floored and can’t wait to find out if they taste as good as they look.
Also remarkable was the appearance of strawberries. Granted they weren’t as pretty as I know they will be next month, but it’s always wonderful to see a splash of color on an otherwise gray and gloomy day.
I had a blast at the farmers market this weekend, stocking up on asparagus, kale, collards, spring onions, and adorable little carrots.
I also found some more rare spring delicacies, like miner’s lettuce and fiddlehead ferns.
And don’t forget to get the best of this amazing citrus season while you have the chance.
Happy spring everyone!

Wow, great photos Darya, very colourful…
Looks like a delicious bunch you bought too – hope they won’t all get juiced!
Hey there Darya!
The pictures look awesome for an iPhone camera! Did you use tilt shift on them all to try and enhance the look? Just curious because they look a bit blurred in some areas and outstandingly focused in others.
I was actually incredibly surprised the iPhone can take photos like this. I was particularly surprised by the lettuce picture (water droplets) and the color in the umbrella shot. Great work.

I did extensive Photoshop editing (as I always do on my photos) to enhance the color and create a tilt shift effect. Here’s how I do it: http://daryapino.com/home/2010/9/29/iphone-photoshop-surprisingly-good-photos.html
Sorry, didn’t mean to seem like I was undermining your work. I just was totally curious 🙂
Thanks so much for the link to your other blog, really helpful!
Haha, no worries! I just wanted to show you how I created the effect. I’m proud of myself for pulling it off when my regular camera crapped out on me unexpectedly 🙂
Those heirloom tomatoes are gorgeous! Wow.
Happy spring!
Really? iPhone photos. Amazing!!! Thanks for the link to learn more.
Love the miner’s lettuce. Just had a taste from my brother’s backyard recently. It grew in the dirt around his raised-bed garden. Grows as a weed in the Gold Country (El Dorado County) where I live–hence the name. It has a sweet, soft flavor–very nice.
Great pictures! As a college student living in a dorm who lives on a meal plan from the school dining halls, I don’t have much control over where the raw ingredients of my food come from. Pictures like this make me very jealous and excited for when I graduate and regain control! Although I can’t follow your blog to a T for now because of my limitations, I’m learning how to eat well for the future and I really appreciate every one of your posts!

P.S. I learned about the site through my love for Diggnation… I have to say it makes me laugh more but YOU have taught me more :)!
That’s awesome! I love Diggnation too 🙂 Also, keep in mind that healthy food doesn’t have to 100% local and organic. Sure farmers markets make it more fun and the produce can taste a bit better, but the principles of healthy eating are the same even if you don’t have the fancy stuff.
