For The Love of Food

Welcome to Friday’s For The Love of Food, Summer Tomato’s weekly link roundup.

This week we finally have definitive proof that the Biggest Loser and Dr. Oz are pure evil. It was just a matter of time. Also, a thought provoking piece on food prices, more condemning news for diet soda and a new recipe search tool from Google.

I read many more wonderful articles than I post here each week. If you’d like to see more or just don’t want to wait until Friday, be sure to follow me on Twitter (@summertomato) or the Summer Tomato Facebook fan page. For a complete list of my favorite stories check out my links on Digg. I’m very active on all these sites and would love to connect with you.

Hi Darya- Can you elaborate on why you no longer drink? Is it because of the origin of grains used to make hard liquor? Would you say wines that are made from US grapes are a safer bet? Why or why not?

    Thanks and happy friday 🙂

I never knew that about Dr.Oz. I see him in the summers when he is on vacation in Turkey and every TV channel tries to get him on their morning shows for women.

Boy, do the men hate that guy .. messing around with their daily habits by putting ‘ideas’ into women’s heads 🙂

The Google Recipe search is going to be a great tool, thanks. Allrecipes.com is so restrictive.

I like Dr. Oz, but only about half of what he says interests me. I think he’s done a lot to teach mainstream America about healthy food choices. Something as simple as eating whole grains is not well known to the average Joe. Thanks to Oz, people obtain that information.

The diet soda link… Seems to be more correlational than anything else? I don’t see any causal information in that article. Would you agree? Seems like there could be many factors that could contribute?

Also, why no more soy milk? I just stopped doing skim milk in my coffee cause of things I’ve read, now you’re not drinking soy milk? Seems like I change my habits back and forth every few months because of what I read!

Yes, the soda link appears correlational (the study isn’t published yet, so I haven’t read the details), however there are ample studies saying it isn’t beneficial compared to regular soda and evidence is mounting that it is bad in it’s own right. But you’re correct that the link is still circumstantial.

I stopped drinking soy milk because I liked Silk but then they started importing their “organic” beans from China. I couldn’t find another brand I liked enough to switch, so I just gave it up. Plus it is just one more processed product I don’t need. Soy beans are fine, but there’s plenty of evidence that processed soy products are not good for you (except the fermented kind).

  5. HI Great articles,

I especially like the cooments on OZ, the scrubs do not do it for me, nor does his info.
Anyhoo, as a former teacher and shrink check out my site for some tips on overcoming and avoiding childhood obesity at home.

    ENJOy the goodness that awaits
