Farmers Market Update: iPhone 4 FTW!

It was a beautiful day today in San Francisco. I’m feeling much better and was super excited to hit up the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market and snap some photos.

Apparently though, I’m still not quite in top form. When I tried to take a picture of these beautiful grapes, my camera smugly informed me that it did not contain its memory card. PhotoFAIL. Luckily, I had my trusty iPhone 4.

I was curious how the new iPhone would perform at the farmers market, and today it had it’s chance to prove itself. I still think I prefer my regular Canon SD900, but overall I was pretty impressed with my pocket phone. What do you think?

Not too much has changed at the market from last week. The late summer produce is beautiful, especially the eggplants, peppers, peaches and plums.

The beets have been marvelous (and impressive!), as are the summer squash.

I’m happy to see green bean season is starting to take off. We are experimenting with pickling some beans this weekend. Recipe on its way.

Don’t forget the greens and onions either, they are all amazing this time of year.

Fresh chamomile was nice to find today as well.

I’ve found some cameras are more smug than others. 😉 Great pictures, btw. The eggplant looks better than any I’ve ever seen.

The photos are pretty legit. BTW…can one make pickled *anything*???

Yep the IP4 is pretty good with both photo and video, and with the flash now, you can even take low light indoor food pics and have them come out pretty well. My wife & I just spent a week in Italy and did the carry-on only deal (mine only half full), and that included taking only our IP4s and iPads (both 3g), no big cameras or laptops. Fantastic way to travel.

All the pics and video were with the IP4 and with iMovie on the phone, I was able to mash together, edit and publish HD video.

Here’s an example of the food. The high-res images are accessible by clicking on the posted images.

So I just got back from Whole Foods (I live a block and a half away) and realized I didn’t know what half the vegetables in there were. I don’t know if you realize but I’ve been your blog for over a year now and I know that you suggest to learn to cook vegetables that I don’t really know about but I *still* have issues doing this. If you’re not too busy, I was wondering if someday I can meet you at Farmer’s Market in SF and you can walk me through a typical day and kind of point out things here and there and maybe just kind of tell me ideas or thoughts of each thing or how you’d want to try it out yourself. I just get so discouraged sometimes because I’m really not an adventurous cook aka can’t see myself getting “creative” with something I completely know nothing about! Let me know if you’d be interested in doing that! Would be fun I bet!

Absolutely. I’m finishing up my PhD (defending Sept 7), but I have a group of people who have been begging me to take them. I’ll ping you when I’m putting that together. Might make it a monthly thing.
