Farmers Market Update: Rain
It was raining pretty hard this morning and I admit it was difficult to motivate for the farmers market. I procrastinated for several hours before finally deciding that I just could not abandon my future self to subsist on sub-par vegetables and fruits for the rest of the week. And if I didn’t go, what would I write about?
I also remembered that because of the rain, this is the last week I can get summer tomatoes until summer 2009. That clinched it.
Yes, for future Darya and for all of you I braved the wet weather. As luck would have it, within ten minutes of arriving a gust of wind spilled the rain that had collected in the top of one of the vendor’s tents and dumped about half a gallon of water on my head. Sigh.
But even though it was kind of miserable, my trip to the market was definitely worth it. Now I know for certain I will be eating amazing food all week.
Today’s purchases include:
- Dinosaur kale
- Gold chard
- Baby artichokes
- Flame grapes
- Giant fuyu persimmons
- Hachiya persimmons
- Pomegranate
- Padrones
- Mediterranean cucumbers
- Early girl tomatoes
- Soul Food eggs
- Pain epi loaf
- Organic coffee

It depends what you mean by “real.” If you mean “real American,” they are from San Francisco so probably not.
Could life get any better, still seeing Padrones and EG tomatoes in November?! And those cucumbers continue to go largely undiscovered among our fellow citizens, I predict that they’ll be next ‘arugula!’

I do take the pics, though sometimes I get a little help from my friends.
Some of the vendors know what I do, the ones I have good relationships with. Generally I don’t formally announce myself so I can remain a little incognito.
This persimmon picture is still one of my all-time favorite farmers market update pictures. I come back every once in a while to find it!
